Wildwood, Florida was named after a story between a crew of workers and a surveyor in 1877. The tale is told that while placing a telegraph line in an area just south of Ocala, it was required that the surveyor check in with the office on occasion to report any findings. During one of these calls the office asked where the surveyor was, the surveyor paused for a moment and responded with I dont know, except in the wild woods. The founder of Wildwood is believed to be I.E. Barwick. Barwick was an entrepreneur who relocated to Wildwood, Florida in 1877 from Georgia at the age of 25 and established a lumbermill. Barwick, along with a few of the early pioneers in the area, also built a few stores, a town square and multiple homes. These early settlers began to pursue agricultural products, such as cotton, for home use and to be shipped out of town for profit. By 1882 the Tropical Florida Railroad extended through Wildwood bringing many expansion opportunities to the area along with it. The first engine named The Cabbage Head arrived in the area on June 1st 1882 coming from Ocala, and within six months another eight miles was added to the railroad extending it through to Panasoffkee, Florida.
